A visit to Rum

OF THE inhabited islands of the Inner Hebrides, Rum is my favourite – not that I would want to live there full-time.

The problem about small islands is getting off and on them at will and having to depend on expensive and unreliable ferries, or taking ill and being a nuisance to the emergency services.

Then there are the social problems. Many folk, usually from the inner cities, dream of the communal way of life but the reality, especially during the winter months, when the broadband connection fails and ‘cabin-fever’ kicks in, is something else. A good example is the ‘the back-stabbers’ ball’, a term once used by locals to describe the remote Knoydart Peninsula’s annual estate dance.
