Vancouver celebrates Tiree emigrant who became the city’s first mayor

THE CITY of Vancouver has recently honoured its first ever mayor, who came from Tiree.

Malcolm MacLean was born on the island in 1944, and became mayor of the Canadian city on May 3, 1886.

Vancouver’s civic authorities decided to mark the 130th anniversary of his election with a moving ceremony.

A number of interested Vancouverites also took part in a wreath-laying commemoration at his grave in Mountain View Cemetery.
