POMEGRANAT in focus
WHERE DID IT COME FROM?
Believed to be native to Iran and other Middle Eastern countries, pomegranates have been around since ancient times and actually play a key role in the Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone, which explains the origin of the seasons. It is said that Spanish sailors took the fruit to America, as, thanks to its tough skin, it was suited to long sea voyages. This helped to spread the population of the pomegranate until it became the fashionable fruit it is today.
HOW TO EAT IT
Pomegranates are grown on small trees, which can reach around 20 feet in height – if you’re visiting somewhere with a warm climate, there’s nothing better than picking a ripe pomegranate straight from the tree. The seeds make a great snack, or can be used to add sweetness to any plant-based recipe – just slice the fruit in half and scoop out the seeds with a spoon (removing any pith as you do); or, if the pomegranate is perfectly ripe, squeeze the sides gently to release the pips.
