The Game Boy family of consoles was enormously popular, but the march of time has left the hardware feeling tired – particularly thanks to their dated LCD displays. Enter the Chromatic, which is touted as “the ultimate retro cartridge gaming console” by its manufacturer, ModRetro – a new venture from Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey. The system achieves compatibility with Game Boy and Game Boy Color games using FPGA technology, similar to what is used in Analogue’s consoles and the MiSTer, and is built from materials that are designed to give the console a premium feel and maximum durability. But can it live up to the hype?
