here are so many incidental delights in Stanley Donen’s comedy thriller (Henry Mancini’s lush score, Maurice Binder’s colourful titles, Audrey Hepburn’s elegant Givenchy fashions) its twist-filled plot almost feels like an afterthought. Meanwhile, with Cary Grant at his urbane peak as the mystery man helping Hepburn’s widow outlive the attentions of her deceased hubby’s criminal associates, it is no surprise this Paris-set caper is often dubbed the best picture Hitchcock never made, even before Grant takes a shower fully clothed.
