SLALOM
OUT 12 FEBRUARY CURZON HOME CINEMA
Set in an Alpine ski resort, this compelling – and semi-autobiographical – debut feature from French writer/director Charlène Favier is a timely coming-of-age drama for the #MeToo era. Emotionally neglected by her parents, 15-year-old Lyz (Noée Abita) is a talented downhill skier who joins a training programme run by an ultrademanding and manipulative male coach (Jérémie Renier). Favier’s camera sticks closely to her young protagonist, capturing a performance from Abita that potently conveys a swirl of contradictory and often discomforting emotions.
