RECON

The haunting effects of a hushed-up wartime atrocity add hints of reflective weight to an otherwise sketchy, verbose WW2 mission movie, adapted by writer/director Robert David Port from Richard Bausch’s novel Peace. A war-wearied (grim foot complaint, too) Alexander Ludwig leads a recon unit into the Italian mountains; Franco Nero cameos as an ambiguous guide. As our sturdy leads trudge gamely through war-is-hell terrain, any tension is undercut by shouty bickering: it’s almost as if they want to make themselves targets.
