‘‘He was there first’’
DAVID JOHANSEN 1950-2025
Blondie’s Chris Stein pays tribute to an “incredibly charismatic” punk pioneer and all-round New York legend
“I FIRST met David in 1967 or ’68. He was dating some girl from my crowd and he wound up at my house in Brooklyn. He was 17, 18. Then four or five years later, while I was at the School Of Visual Arts here in New York, I started seeing flyers in the lobby for shows by the New York Dolls, predominantly at the Mercer Arts Center. Soon after that, I read a write-up in The Village Voice that said the vocalist was very like Mick Jagger, yadda yadda yadda. I loved the Stones, so I went down to check them out.
