SMALL FACES
“I WAS ENVIOUS!”
Pete Townshendrecalls the Small Faces’ fun factor
“THE Small Faces were so kind of wayward. They always seemed to be having such a good time, whereas in The Who it was pretty miserable. Or serious and aggressive. So I was very envious of the fun that they had. “But Steve Marriott, especially, was also very serious about music. He set very high standards for himself and he was a musicologist. If I brought to them Music From Big Pink – which I’d got from Peter Tork of The Monkees when he and Mama Cass were having a party at his house in Laurel Canyon, playing it through this great big system – they brought to me Dr John’s Gris-Gris. I remember listening to that at their flat. So we were sharing music a lot at that time.
