Ten clan stalls representing the local clans of Loch Awe have undergone major restoration and new lights have been installed to highlight this important and colourful piece of local history in St Conan’s Kirk, Lochawe. The finishing touch was added by the skills of Betty Jamieson, a local volunteer, who handmade and sewed 10 kneelers in the ancient tartan of each clan. Betty and her husband, Halbert, returned the kneelers to the Kirk last week and are pictured in front of the refurbished stalls. The trustees and friends of St Conan’s thanked Betty for her amazing work. Other restoration in the Kirk involves the vestry, now equipped with a disabled toilet, heating and repaired windows. This will be a boost for visiting ministers, patrons at events and visitors on guided tours. Upstairs in the old Sunday school, refurbishment and major roof works have created a beautiful, heated space. This will be used as a meeting place for local people and a library for archives. Halbert, a former Sunday school attendee, is shown sharing memories of the early 1950s in very diTherent surroundings, along with Betty, twin grandchildren Jamie and Ailie and Peter Hennessy of Friends of St Conan’s.
