SPOTLIGHT ON...
Barnsley Central Writers
Barnsley Central Writers are a keen group who (before the Covid-19 lockdown) met every Monday evening at the Masonic Hall, writes Jeannette Ayrton.
The group, originally an offshoot from a Thursday morning group, has been established for over twelve years.
Under normal circumstances, the weekly meetings are run on the basis of a shared task, lasting 15 or 20 minutes followed by everyone reading their work (though no one is forced to do this and sometimes, a member uses the time to work instead on personal material). All the resulting material can lead to discussion on interpretations of ideas, the use of interesting phrasing and vocabulary and, occasionally, the discussion of grammatical constructions. This all sounds very formal but the group is friendly and very positive in its interest in both writing and writing well. In fact, during the lockdown period, four members completed novels and another took the leap to apply for a creative writing MA.
