Why is writing so beautifully painful sometimes?
Philosopher William James had it right when he said ‘nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task’. But why do we procrastinate on deadlines in the first place? Why can’t our brains cooporate with our calendars?
Well, I don’t think procrastination is about laziness; it’s part of my natural creative process, a necessary evil, to let my brain quietly stew and sieve through my ideas. But when we actually get down to putting the words on paper, it can become excruciating to constantly find the right ones. I know that if I am offered a book deal, as is my dream, my boyfriend would walk into my flat and see me writhing in pain in front of my laptop. There’s a reason ‘writing’ and ‘writhing’ are only one letter apart, just saying...
