Design advice: WINDOWS & GLAZING
Windows are among the most prominent architectural features of a home – both inside and out – so it pays to spend time getting it right at the planning stages
For many self builders, creating a bespoke home with plenty of light, ventilation and fantastic views, is the dream. Your selection of windows and glazing is integral to your overall design, but with so much choice it’s often hard to know where to begin. Read on for guidance in selecting the right products for your project.

Architectural style
Many contemporary projects are characterised by the swathes of glazing designers and self builders alike are keen to incorporate. This often comes with narrow frames to maximise the outlook. Aluminium is popular for this, or wood with an unfussy profile. Some modern PVCu units can even deliver striking (if not quite as sleek) results; but do be sure to select high-quality products. For period-style properties, popular options are sash or casement timberframed units, with or without glazing bars.
