AL JARREAU
BREAKIN’ AWAY
MUSIC ON VINYL
★★★
Featuring Toto and giving Al Jarreau a Grammy, the smooth Californian pop-soul style on his 1981 fifth album didn’t quite cut through in the UK, despite We’re In This Love Together sitting squarely next to George Benson for pioneering late-night cab driver relaxation vibes. Half the album comprises jazz covers, and guitarist Jay Graydon’s production is just too polished to transmit some of the emotion in Jarreau’s delivery.
