DITCH streaming for DVD and Blu-ray
Fed up with rising costs and shrinking choice on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and other streaming services? Jonathan Parkyn explains why it’s time to rediscover the joys of physical media
Not so long ago, streaming services felt like the future. Cheap, convenient and offering an apparently endless supply of films and TV shows, they promised a golden age of unlimited entertainment. Fast-forward to today, and the picture isn’t quite so rosy, for reasons we’ll explain.
The solution is refreshingly old fashioned – simply cancel your expensive streaming subscriptions and go back to watching DVDs and Blu-rays. This might feel like a technological step backwards, but discs are cheap, plentiful and may even look and sound better than their streaming equivalents. You can pick exactly what you want, get to own films and shows you love and keep them forever – plus you’ll enjoy movies without interruptions from annoying ads.
What’s gone wrong with streaming?
The most obvious problem with streaming services is their increasing cost. Standard Netflix and Amazon Prime Video subscriptions used to be relatively affordable. But streaming platforms have hiked their prices to the point where many ‘standard’ subscription plans now cost more than double what they did only a few years ago.
