I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT Valentine’s Day. This is an unusual development. My husband and I don’t usually bother. We’ve never even worried much about wedding anniversaries. For our first, I gave him a handmade card and he gave me a set of fishing knives. I found out later they’d been a free gift with the drench order. Since then, we’ve just passed the day with a “Happy anniversary” greeting, when we remember.
We had a very big, fun, memorable country wedding. That seemed like enough. But it was 22 years ago. Twenty-two! Now, we have three fledgling children, one of whom is about to fly away to the mainland for uni. Her twin brother is a third-year apprentice carpenter, quite literally building a life of his own. Their little sister – our baby – is going into Year 11 at school and thus entering an era in which her mother is intensely irritating and needs to back off.
