Weekend away March brings the first day of spring, which means daffodils in abundance. We have the poet Wordsworth to thank for the fact that the Lake District is forever associated with the nodding yellow blooms, and what better place to zip off to for a long weekend of walks punctuated by pints of quenching ale and ploughman’s lunches? Buy a copy of Wainwright and pick a lake – Ullswater or Buttermere, perhaps – for a vitality-restoring walk. Just add the obligatory flask of hot chocolate and secrete some Kendal Mint Cake in your pocket to fuel your steps.
