THOMPSON WINS SPRINT DOUBLE
JAMAICAN BEATS DAFNE SCHIPPERS OVER 200M

ELAINE THOMPSON became the first female to complete a 100m and 200m Olympic double since Florence Griffith-Joyner in 1988 and later admitted that she had surprised herself in achieving such a feat.

Elaine Thompson: held off world champion Dafne Schippers to take gold
Such was the shock, and also largely the lactic, Thompson lay down on the track after her win as the results – including her victory in 21.78, Dafne Schippers’ silver in 21.88 and Tori Bowie’s 22.15 for bronze – were confirmed on the big screen.
“It was amazing,” the winner said later. “Running 200m is very hard! There was a lot of lactic pain so I had to lay down to recover for a few minutes and then do my celebration.”
It’s no surprise her body was feeling the effects as just five days earlier she had started her 100m campaign, which ended with 10.71 - a time just 0.01 off her PB - for gold. The Jamaican then returned to the track to finish second in her 200m heat in 22.63 and runner-up in her semi-final in 22.13 behind Schippers with 21.96 before she was back in the blocks, lining up in lane six for the final.
“I know Dafne is a strong finisher,” said Thompson, “so I knew I needed a strong finish as well.”
But the Jamaican had both a strong finish, and a strong start. After powering ahead in the first half of the race, although 100m fifth-placer Schippers was quickly closing in lane four, the gap which Thompson had already created was too big for the Dutch world champion and former heptathlete to make up. The top two from last year’s IAAF World Championships in Beijing were switched, with Schippers falling as she reached the line, while Bowie pipped Ivory Coast’s Marie-Josee Ta Lou for bronze to gain a second medal of the Games after her 100m silver.
