Depeche Mode may have felt rather aggrieved when Sony released their muchanticipated comeback album in the same week as labelmate Lana Del Rey’s latest identikit long-player.
Not only was going up against LDR ill-advised, Sony charged £46 for Memento Mori’s vinyl version, which had a blank fourth side, rather than including any of the five unreleased songs from the album sessions. Small wonder that Del Rey outsold Depeche by nearly 2:1. It all left rather a bad taste, when otherwise album 15 is a fitting tribute to the late Andy Fletcher, down to the simple black rectangle in the inner sleeve next to portraits of Dave Gahan and Martin Gore.
