LOST & FOUND
GET CLOSE
PRETENDERS
Get Close might be on record as the fourth album of the Pretenders’ career, but in reality it marked the stumble of Chrissie Hynde into an enforced one-woman show. Their New Wave beginnings overcome by ageing bones and ever-changing line-ups, the band essentially now consisted of a maturing Hynde and numerous session mates after the deaths of two high-profile members and the difficult departure of grieving drummer Martin Chambers. However, Hynde’s voice was at its most resonant. Her vocals, especially on huge hit Hymn To Her – a female empowerment ballad written by an old schoolfriend – are arguably the greatest of her career. Album opener My Baby has a pleasant lilt and brilliant work from go-to session player and Haircut 100 drummer Blair Cunningham, while Tradition Of Love is gloriously elongated and launch hit single Don’t Get Me Wrong joyful as much on the first as on the 1,000th listen.
