Prior to the rise of pub rock in the late 70s, internationally-successful Antipodean pop acts were something of a rarity. Certainly, The Seekers were one such success story, while emigrants such as Olivia Newton-John and the Bee Gees, who had arrived from the UK via the so-called ‘Ten Pound Pom’ scheme, also left their cultural mark. The musical landscape altered significantly in the wake of punk, while MTV’s launch provided a platform for a new generation of global stars. Covering the period 1980 to 2002, here we select some of the most revered, iconic and biggest-selling singles from the land Down Under.
20 PSEUDO ECHO
FUNKY TOWN (1986)
Inspired by the synth-pop of Japan, Simple Minds and Ultravox, Melbourne act Pseudo Echo (whose name was sourced from a keyboard user manual) formed in 1982. The following year, the band received their first big break when they performed an embryonic version of debut single Listening on TV show Countdown – the Australian equivalent of Top Of The Pops, not the popular words and numbers game – but their greatest success came with a rockier take on Lipps Inc. disco classic Funkytown, which topped the charts for seven weeks. It peaked at UK No.8.
19 DELTA GOODREM
BORN TO TRY (2002)
An accomplished musician as well as a bit-part actor, Delta Goodrem signed to Sony at the age of just 15, but her musical career got off to an inauspicious start when her Britney Spears-esque debut single I Don’t Care flopped in 2001. Her luck changed after landing a tailor-made role as aspiring singer-songwriter Nina Tucker in long-running soap Neighbours the following year. As part of an ongoing storyline, the singer showcased stunning ballad Born To Try, co-written with Zimbabwean musician Audius Mtawarira. An Australian No.1, it reached No.3 in the UK.
