After their sturdy approach to both Communards albums, London do a similarly decent job here of re-examining Jimmy Somerville’s solo debut. On its release in 1989, just two years after The Communards’ final LP Red went Top Five, Read My Lips barely scraped into the Top 30.
At this remove, it appears political rather than musical estrangement from the public caused the commercial wariness. Mostly living in New York, Somerville was promoting the local AIDS campaign group Act Up at every turn, arrested for protesting in Australia and daringly pressing an Act Up T-shirt on President Chirac of France.
