Speed up your Mac with Shortcuts
Create your own automations – we show you how!
A
pple has provided automation tools in macOS for many years – Automator has been in macOS since 2005 – but Shortcuts makes automation even easier, and Apple has been gently nudging everyone to move to the newer app. Shortcuts are groups of actions, which are commands that tell your device to do something. You might have a shortcut that copies a web address and adds it to a new email, or one that adjusts an image and then saves it in a particular place, or a shortcut that uses your own photo and text to make a meme for sharing on social media. You can call up shortcuts manually or create automations that make them happen when specific criteria are met, such as when you get an email from a particular person.
