Montreal’s genre-mashing trap-metaller made us a mix just as varied as her music
WORDS: STEPHEN HILL
“THE FIRST THING I wanna shout out is DANNY BROWN’sAtrocity Exhibition. I feel like there are ways to craft an album and I feel like that is the perfectly crafted album. It’s an album about just falling down, falling apart, and I’ve never experienced the concept of a descent be that well executed. It actually feels like you’re going on the descent with him, the production on it is phenomenal, the rapping on it is phenomenal, the experimental and weird beats he is rapping over, and doing that so well, it’s just incredible. It’s inspiring, and it helped shaped me in a way that it means I’m not afraid when it comes to taking chances with my music. BLACK DRESSES’sPeaceful As Hell encapsulates so many emotions over this sensitive but optimistic sound and production. It shaped me as well, mostly in my vocal parts. I hear the way they take chances vocally, from enunciating your words to screaming and shouting, and it inspired me as a trans person, because I have a very complicated relationship with my own voice. It’s extremely motivating for me to hear people take their voice to so many different places.
