The Devil’s Cattle
MONGREL
South African fuzz rockers have a rifle through their record collection
The South African fuzz merchants return with another amphetamine-fuelled joyride through the dive bars and dark alleys of their psychic landscape. Building on the darker elements of 2019’s Tårn, their latest showcases a dizzying array of styles, from sleazy backroom funk (Gregory), to full-throttle garage rockers (Heart Like An Alligator) to hyperkinetic blasts of psychedelia (Lead Pills And Thrills). There’s also metal, classic rock and even a bit of acoustic balladry in God Knows. But The Devil’s Cattle feels almost too eclectic; styles jump so dramatically that it sometimes feels like wholly different bands at work. Ultimately however, this is 51 minutes of groovy, hip-shaking fun.
