Italian post-metal collective tread familiar ground
Over the past decade or so the term ‘post-metal’ has shifted from referring to a panoply of different styles and approaches to signalling when a band sound a bit like Isis and/or Neurosis. Lumbering riffs? Ponderous rhythms? Throat-shredding vocals? Desolate arpeggios? All of this applies to Italian band La Fin, whose debut album is nevertheless likely to prove an enjoyable listen for fans of the above. To be fair, The Endless Inertia - a very post-metal album title, it has to be said - showcases a band whose grasp of dynamics elevates them above the subgenre’s more stolid practitioners. Plus, it’s a gorgeous-sounding record whose heaviest moments, such as Zero, ring with exceptional clarity and emotional force.
