Christmas comes early for Ferguslie

‘It’s not like us to be giving goals away like we did today’

Ferguslie Star 5

Oban Saints 4

SAFL Premier Division

AN uncharacteristically sloppy defensive performance at Seedhill, Paisley, last Saturday afternoon ended Saints’ unbeaten start to the season.

The Oban side were up against Scottish Amateur Football League Premier Division new boys Ferguslie Star who took full advantage of Saints beneficence to edge a nine-goal thriller in the first meeting between the two clubs.

Saints were without top scorer Donald Campbell, his place in the front three taken by Paul Carmichael who proved an able deputy acquitting himself well up front with Craig MacEwan and Dean Smith. Dean was a late replacement for Ross Maitland who dropped to the bench suffering from a heavy cold.

The visitors kicked off in bright sunshine, attacking the Seedhill Pavilion end, and immediately took the game to the hosts. Star lined up with a rigid 5-4-1 formation and appeared content to sit in and hit Saints on the break which they did successfully in the sixth minute, capitalising on a slip by Myles McAuley midway inside his own half.
