It’s always fun to grow something new. You may discover a plant that loves your growing conditions and that you love to eat, which then becomes a regular crop for you for years afterwards.
By ‘challenging’, we simply mean plants that in one way or another require a little more care than many staple crops. It might be that they require higher temperatures, so will only thrive in a greenhouse, for example, or they may need a different type of soil.
Seed catalogues and gardening magazines can be a source of inspiration for new and interesting varieties, but it’s also important to look at heirloom plants. These are old cultivars, often handed down through generations. By growing these you will be supporting the conservation of unusual varieties for future generations, as well as increasing biodiversity in your own garden.
