As ever, there are lots more books we couldn’t fit in. The Rapunzel story gets a dark fantasy makeover in Andrea Eames’s A TANGLED MAGIC (30 July, HarperVoyager). Heroine Netta has known only life in a tower. After it’s attacked and her mother goes missing, she must venture into a kingdom on the brink of civil war, with different factions after the magic in her hair. The punning title alone is enough to earn Billie Host’s SPLASHER (16 July, Penguin) a mention – set in 2006, this campy horror centres on a university swimming pool plagued by freak accidents. Adapted from a podcast, Mike Muncer’s THE EVOLUTION OF HORROR (16 July, Welbeck) breaks down eight key horror subgenres, with overviews, original illustrations, and write-ups of milestone films – more for newbies than old-timers. JIM HENSON’S LABYRINTH: THE ILLUSTRATED NOVELIZATION (out now, Titan) isn’t the original 1986 version by ACH Smith (reissued in hardback over a decade ago) but a new version, with text by YA author Liz Braswell and art by Andrea Guardino. We’d love to have shown you the concept art, creature designs and graphics in THE ART OF ANDOR (out now, Abrams), but Disney couldn’t supply us with anything. To be fair, they’re probably short-handed, eh? Finally, MADELINE SMITH, BOND GIRL (out now, White Owl) may be the title of her official biography, but the Live And Let Die star also appeared in horrors like The Vampire Lovers and Theatre Of Blood. Expect anecdotes regarding all of these, as well as Two Ronnies and Up Pompeii.
