Based on Enid Blyton’s children’s books, THE MAGIC FARAWAY TREE (out now, 4K/Blu-ray/ DVD) sees three siblings transported to a series of fantastical lands. We said: “There’s a distinct lack of excitement, and not enough charm or laughs to make up for the shortfall.” No extras, it seems. Karl Urban plays Johnny Cage in MORTAL KOMBAT II (20 July, 4K/Blu-ray/DVD), which folds the quest for a mystical amulet into scrapping at an interdimensional tournament. We said: “Faithful to the videogames’ fondness for taking their mythology far too seriously... Every attempt at emotional heft comes off as tonally jarring.” Bonuses: five featurettes (28 minutes) cover topics like the fighters, combat and the thought-provoking philosophical themes. (Only joking.) In THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE (20 July, 4K/Blu-ray/DVD), Nintendo’s plumbers head into space after Bowser Jr kidnaps Princess Rosalina. We said: “A considerable step up from its flimsy predecessor.” A 22-minute piece on the voice actors is the most sizeable; you also get another six featurettes (39 minutes). THEY WILL KILL YOU (out now, 4K/Blu-ray/ DVD) sees an ex-con crashing into a hotel, looking for her kidnapped sister. We said: “Fight scenes are exceptional, with limbs all over the place... Ultimately though, it’s somewhat incoherent.” Bonuses: four featurettes (28 minutes) – a Making Of, plus bits on designing the hotel, fight scenes and “crafting carnage”. Finally, the big TV box set is STRANGER THINGS: THE COMPLETE SERIES (27 July, 4K/Blu-ray).
