Superhero comics aren’t good
at endings. Stretching things out to breaking point (and beyond) is the usual strategy, so when Marvel’s new Ultimate Universe established a two-year countdown to the return of the evil Maker (aka the original Ultimate Reed Richards), it was easy to assume this would just be a narrative stepping stone that would wrap up “Phase One” of a longer project. Instead, Marvel has unexpectedly decided that despite impressive sales, the final battle with the Maker is also the end for the whole Ultimate line of comics, with all the narrative threads being tied up.
