New colossus
New colossus
As Project Robot transforms into Gen Atlas, Fumito Ueda guides us through his process
Strictly speaking, Fumito Ueda has created or helped to create five videogames to date: before directing his most famous titles – Ico, Shadow Of The Colossus and The Last Guardian – he began his career as an animator at Warp, where he worked on the monogrammatic 1995 horror adventure D and its spiritual sequel, Enemy Zero.
Even when taking his formative, non-lead-designer credits into account, it’s difficult to characterise Ueda’s approach to game making as anything other than ‘selective’; considering a decade has passed between the launch of The Last Guardian and the full reveal of what will be his sixth game, Gen Atlas, you have to assume that when he decided to commit to “the idea about giant robots,” as he describes it to us, it was with good reason. This is where our conversation starts, when we meet with Ueda at the end of the second day of Summer Game Fest, just as evening is turning to night.
