THE KITCHEN PHILOSOPHER
food for thought.
The Christmas feasting was barely over when Cadbury Creme Eggs started appearing on shop shelves. Easter used to be preceded by 40 days of fasting during Lent. Now it’s around 80 days of more, not fewer, sweet treats. It’s not surprising that fasting for Lent has become a thing of the past. In the UK, the majority now identifies as having no religion and only one in 20 attends church. Why would anyone continue to deprive themselves without a religious motivation?
I’m certainly happy to discard the kind of puritanical religion that glorifies in the mortification of the flesh, but we should be careful not to throw out the baby with the icy bath water. Temporary fasting can have several benefits.
