The Charlatans are planning a reissue campaign for the end of the year. The releases will follow singer Tim Burgess’ new solo album I Love The New Sky, which is released on 22 May. Burgess told Long Live Vinyl: “I’ve been archiving Charlatans tapes and other material for a reissue series at the end of the year. We’re looking at including some unreleased things, so I’ve been going through the demos and rehearsal tapes.”
The campaign will mark 30 years since The Charlatans’ debut album Some Friendly was released on Beggars subsidiary Situation Two. That label folded shortly after second album Between 10th And 11th was released in 1992, when The Charlatans became part of the main Beggars group. The band have also released on Universal, Sanctuary and Cooking Vinyl, while their most recent albums – Modern Nature from 2015 and 2017’s Different Days – were on BMG. Their 2008 album, You Cross My Path, famously became the first LP to be given away online by a major artist. Speaking of the co-ordination required to get a full campaign underway, Burgess said: “A lot of deals have to be done for the songs that are out. Luckily, I’m concentrating on the songs that haven’t been released that we’ve found!” There will be a full interview with Tim Burgess in the next issue of LLV.
