BLOOD
Five years after career-stalling second album Moth Boys, Spector remind everyone why they were once so hyped in a handy round-up of the two EPs and four standalone singles the alt-pop favourites have released since 2018. There’s also the charming Bryndon 2, exclusive to the vinyl here. Fred Macpherson’s lyrics sometimes fall the wrong side of clever/ try-hard, while attempts at minimalism like Wild Guess fail to totally convince. Mostly, though, the five-piece still sound like the most ambitious gang in town, just that one lucky break away from becoming a new Pulp, with the same gutter grandeur of Razzmatazz-era Jarvis. Armed with songs as big as Fine Not Fine and the soaring I Won’t Wait, Spector are deserving of a fresh dose of attention. Heroically daft they may be, but at least they’re heroic.
