Arno Bitschy’s stirring documentary tells the evocative stories of numerous women living transient lives, hopping America’s freight trains. It was three years in the making for the French director, and Ellis, who scored The Assassination Of Jesse James… and The Road, had little hesitation in taking on the soundtrack. What’s most remarkable is that Ellis composed most of the eight tracks with his Reface DX synth and laptop while on the Metro or Eurostar between sessions for Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ Ghosteen. His subtly swirling ambient beds are interspersed with the voices of these remarkable women seeking freedom and identity on the open rails as America’s infinitely beautiful landscapes scroll by. Prepare for extreme wanderlust.
