WHERE IT’S AT IS WHERE YOU ARE
Less follow-up and more companion piece to last year’s fine The World Is A Bell, during whose mixing it was recorded, About Minerals is a more ambient collection first released last year as a limited run of 30 cassettes. Similar, if more oblique, echoes of cult act Earwig remain, most notably in the quietly bubbling An Edge, An Ending and the title track’s hypnotic minimalism, where Melinda Bronstein’s vocals float above a pulsating bed of synths. But Layers Of Regret is a gravitydefying chamber of silvery echoes, while Beach Loom offers the stillness of Arvo Pärt’s tintinnabuli mixed with Labradford’s quiet drones. Fans of Loscil’s Equivalents will also find pleasure in Weather Wires, which moves in slow-motion, concluding with disembodied voices to heighten its appealingly disorientating effect.
