LES DISQUES DU CREPUSCULE
For a few heady months in 1980, Josef K looked set for bona fide rock stardom. This never quite happened, probably because a band that sounded like the missing link between early Orange Juice and Joy Division was never likely to mirror the breakout post-punk success of, say, Echo & The Bunnymen. Problems recording Josef K’s debut LP for Postcard didn’t help either, with one version of the record (latterly released as Sorry For Laughing) shelved as too polished and replaced by this offering, which singer Paul Haig later called “almost unlistenable”. He’s wrong. The Only Fun In Town is rough and ready, but the songs, notably the stately It’s Kinda Funny, more than stand the test of time, as do the Peel Session tracks and singles included on a second disc. It’s reissued on clear vinyl.
