IARNRÓD Éireann’s Sperry ultrasonic testing machine was out on the network again during late August and throughout September, with the consist including a most unusual addition. The RPSI’s ex-BR Mk.1 brake/ heating van No. 3173 (built in 1956 as No. W21146) has been in use throughout the season’s Sperry outings after issues were discovered with the usual brake van. Following a meeting with RPSI representatives it was agreed that No. 3173 could be provided. The van, hauled by 071 Class No. 079, is pictured passing through Cherryville Junction during a Portlaoise-Heuston Sperry working.
