T here are a lot of comprehensive open source encryption tools, and we’ve featured them in the magazine, time and again. What sets Picocrypt apart from the others is its minuscule size and simple interface, which makes it far more approachable than its popular peers. The app can also authenticate files, which helps ensure it isn’t tampered with during transmission, especially over an insecure channel.
Picocrypt is available as a distro-agnostic Flatpak and can be installed with flatpak install flathub io. github.picocrypt.Picocrypt .
The app has a simple interface. To encrypt files, simply drag and drop them into the app, enter a password, and hit the Encrypt button. To decrypt, drop the encrypted files into Picocrypt, enter the password and hit Decrypt.
Picocrypt also supports the use of keyfiles as an additional form of authentication. In fact, you can choose to only use keyfiles instead of a password to encrypt your files. Picocrypt lets you use any file as a keyfile. Also, not only can you use multiple keyfiles, but you can also use the Require Correct Order option to ask the app for the correct order of keyfiles to be present for a successful decryption.
The Deniability option in Picocrypt hides the fact that you are encrypting files, giving you plausible deniability.
