Millennial prog-hardcore masterpiece still soars
It’s hard to overstate just how revolutionary Cave In’s second album was when it dropped back in 2000. The Massachusetts band’s jump from metallic hardcore bruisers to prog-adjacent post-hardcore experimentalists blindsided some and wowed many more. Jupiter’s meld of steely hardcore riffs, melodic vocals and expansive song structures sounded like Radiohead if they had grown up listening to Snapcase, influencing everyone from Mastodon to Coheed & Cambria. A quarter of a century on, the likes of Brain Candle, In The Stream Of Commerce and the aptly titled Big Riff still sound many years ahead of their time.
