Danish prog metallers’ myth-inspired second album
The follow-up to 2022’s debut album, Tro, finds Danefae embarking on an even richer journey of otherworldly prog metal mystique. Trøst takes you by the hand, enticing you into a melodic realm of hypnotic, Danish-language vocals and ethereal soundscaping, with chuggy riffs and the occasional blastbeat lurking in the shadows. Danefae’s exploration of mythology bubbles with wonder and depth. Endof-days riffage is offset by delicate instrumentation and vice versa, not least on P.S. Far er død, which shifts from delicate folky innocence to a menacing siren, as the acoustic vulnerability builds to a frazzled crescendo of growls before emerging triumphant. For all its bursts of heaviness, Trøst mostly exists in the light, from Fuglekongen’s organic birdsong to Vætter’s fluttering keys, while Anne Olesen’s chameleonic vocals only add to its mystique. Trøst’s depths are seemingly endless, with plenty of intricate details to unravel. ■■■■■■■■■■
