PHOTOGRAPHS published last month showing women strolling through Tehran’s suburbs smiling and with their hair uncovered were picked up by news outlets around the world. “They are almost everywhere, women with their brown, black, blonde and grey locks,” said the photographer, AP reporter Jon Gambrell, adding that while he’d heard Iranian women had begun to drop the hijab: “I didn’t fully understand the scale of that refusal until I saw it myself.”
