We reflected on the legacy of the wonderful Chris Squire in
Prog
160.
THE SQUIRE OF PROG!
I really enjoyed your tributes to Chris Squire in Prog 160, but – getting very ‘muso’ here – one further bass innovation he brought about that I don’t think anyone mentioned is the drop tuning of his low B string (on a five-string bass) down to an A. To the best of my knowledge, no other five-string bassist has attempted/achieved that. It helped create that brilliant, lumbering riff to Big Generator’s title track.
It was also great to see some attention paid to the fascinating Andy Summers/ Robert Fripp collaboration. I’d urge fans to check out a great BBC 2 documentary Fripp: New York – Wimborne [from 1985], which shows the two guitarists rehearsing together in a room above Square Records in the latter Dorset market town!
