IN MEMORY OF SIMON HOUSE

A key presence in Hawkwind’ s line-up during the 1970s, Simon House brought an incredible palette of sonic colours to the band’s songs with his exciting and imaginative keyboard and violin work. Leaving to become a member of David Bowie’s live band, he went on to become an in-demand session player before rejoining Hawkwind again (twice) and releasing a series of solo albums. We pay tribute to House, who died at the end of May.

Out Of This World

Thirty years ago, Marillion released their final album on EMI, their first not to reach the UK Top 10. Afraid Of Sunlight has since been hailed as one of the band’s greatest recordings, but tragedy lay at its heart, even though it kickstarted their career as one of the most successful independent groups. The band recall the challenging times that threatened their career and, at times, their sanity.

In 1976, Gentle Giant released their only official live album, Playing The Fool – The Official Live. Nearly 50 years later, it’s been reimagined in an immersive experience that reproduces the entire concert as if the listener is in the audience. Derek Shulman, Gary Green, Kerry Minnear and John Weathers give Prog the lowdown and reflect on the original’s legacy.

Lifting Shadows Off A Dream

Jonas Renkse is forging new landscapes in Katatonia ’s gloom-laden prog metal world. Following the departure of founding guitarist Anders Nyström, a new-look line-up has released Nightmares As Extensions Of The Waking State . The vocalist and songwriter reveals the vivid dream that inspired the album and his plans for the new incarnation of the band.

Crimson Echoes

The John Hackett Band are celebrating a decade of making music together with their second album, the recently released Red Institution . The four-piece talk about their easy chemistry, songwriting inspiration and those pinch-me moments of performing material originally by King Crimson and the other Hackett.

Bursting With Pride

They were favourites at the Marquee and their line-up included a young Steven Wilson, but Pride Of Passion never reached the dizzying heights of their peers. Several decades after their original split, they’re back with a new EP and FM keyboardist Jem Davis in tow. He’s a musician who never plans for anything, but Tangerine Dream fans can rejoice in not just the 50th-anniversary reissue of Phaedra , but also a new album from one of its creators. Synth maestro Peter Baumann makes a welcome return with Nightfall , which continues his ongoing exploration of the human condition. He tells Prog why he prefers to do things in a haphazard way and why he wishes he’d had the chance to work with Edgar Froese again.
