Jenny Hval is that rarest of artists, an accessible avant-gardist. Like Laurie Anderson, she’s able to transmit lofty and often abstract ideas with an idiosyncratic charm and clarity. Moreover, like Anderson, she’s funny and a fabulous storyteller to boot. Hval moonlights as a successful novelist in her native Norway (some of her books have been translated into English by Verso), which perhaps helps explain why the conceptual narratives of her musical work are so well-developed.
