ANDREW WROTE MICRO MACHINES FOR THE NES AND WORKED ON THE GAME GENIE CHEAT PERIPHERAL
A Q&A WITH
How difficult was it to create
Micro Machines
on the NES?
We had a brief document that someone had put together [at Codemasters] from reverse engineering the hardware but I don’t remember it being especially hard to work out how to get the NES to do what we wanted. I already had loads of experience coding for the C64 and there were actually quite a few similarities between the two (character-based graphics, hardware sprites, coding in 6502). I think the main challenge was that the NES had separate video RAM that wasn’t directly addressable by the CPU, so everything needed to be updated indirectly through a couple of registers.
