Flying into Japan I knew that it was going to be hot, and we knew it was going to be windy. I wouldn't say I was apprehensive but even though we’d done heat training in Banyoles, and a lot of work in the sauna and heat chamber, you never really know what it is going to be like.
We simulated it as best as we could but until you get there and you’re rowing outdoors in the conditions, you never know.
I was looking forward to getting on the course but first we did a holding camp. It was all on the land, so we trained on the ergs. I was itching to get on the water and see what it was like. To be honest, it ended up being better than I expected. We were well prepared, and it was not as rough and unrowable as I thought it would be, which was good.
