The World Rowing Junior Championships returned in 2021 after an outright cancellation in 2020, taking place on the international regatta course in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The most head turning performance of the regatta was that of Switzerland’s junior women’s single, Aurelia-Maxima Janzen. Not only did she manage to win the junior world title while significantly under-rating the rest of the field in the final – by not going above 30 strokes per minute for most of the race – she inexplicably chose to row with old school, teardrop-shaped macon spoons on the end of her carbon oars. Most impressively, she also won the silver medal at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships in July in Racice, aged 17, using the same macon blades and low-rate technique.
