US research has found that barefoot running improves working memory – the bit responsible for storing and managing information so we can learn and reason. After shedding their shoes, people’s memories improved by around 16 per cent, but laced up runners saw no such improvement. Researchers wonder if it’s because shoe dodgers have to use their working memory to navigate around whatever’s on the ground.
